Biography

Xyan had always been praised in her tribe as a strong swimmer. From her nameday, she always felt the sea calling to her, in a way no other Ejinn had. And thus did she always find herself turning her gaze there, thinking one day she will find herself swimming from the mouth of the One River to discover what hid in the waters beyond.
Her wish would be granted, but not in the way she expected. Her tribe had been travelling through their normal swimming paths, knowing that the Nadaam was coming soon and trying to hang low, when another tribe caught up to them, looking to gain strong spearsman and women into their ranks. Xyan threw herself between a fishers' net and a young Ejinn, saving them from capture. As she tried to wrest herself free, she bid her brothers and sisters escape, to leave her behind and protect themselves from further interference. As the others fled, she managed to wrest the net from her captors, but in doing so, damned herself to sink to the bottom of the sea, having became too entangled to free herself. She was swept deeper and away on the currents, out into the deep blue.
Lungs burning, her body screamed for air, and she was preparing for the cool embrace of the Dusk Mother's mercy when a pink and blue glowing light appeared before her -- as fate would have it, not the Dawn Father, not the Dusk Mother, but an Auspice. Having seen her being thrown about, it had grown curious, wondering how a Steppe Woman could be thrown so far afield. Xyan, unable to respond, simply shook her head as her conscious faded. Deciding to grant her pity, the Auspice gifted her a blessing, one that was given to very few Ejinn in their lifetimes. In exchange for her full-time life on land, she would be able to breathe underwater indefinitely. She could not go for long without entering a body of water, lest she feel her lungs unable to handle the air of the land.
Blessing or not, Xyan was not fully aware of the gift until she had woken up on the sea floor, the net caught against the corals of the seafloor. The Dark Xaela scales had been replaced with a swirling mix of pink and blue, with pink freckling, bioluminescent like a deep sea fish, adorning her body. Finally breaking herself free of her tangle, she returned to her tribe, where she was welcomed and celebrated in her changing.
Xyan, having survived the ordeal, took this as a new chance at life that was gifted to her, even if it had its setbacks. The sea continued its Siren's call, and when she had finally received permission, she answered, finally free to find out what there was to discover on the great blue.

Xyan met Rin as she was first travelling the world at large, trying to find her way in life. With her experience as a refugee in Eorzea, Rin was able to help her understand the differences of the cultures. She thinks of her like a Sunscale Sister! Rin is also teaching her the katana.
